Did you see the news? A sudden chill has washed over America as a drought in Mexico and the depleting supply of water from the Colorado River has led to a scarcity in red jalapeños, and Sriracha sauce!
The cultivation and harvesting of jalapeños is a hugely labour intensive. Which is why the sauce company is feeling the burn…
In April, Huy Fong, the makers of Sriracha, sent a letter to customers alerting them that the company was navigating a “severe shortage of chilli” caused by weather conditions in Mexico where the peppers are grown.
Sriracha connoisseurs will undoubtedly highlight the unique, and hard to replicate flavour as a mark of its popularity.
There are just five kinds of chilli peppers grown across the Americas, from Mexico to Bolivia, that have the hotness required for Sriracha sauce.
With prices for the sought after sauce rocketing, now’s the time to start stocking your cupboard with an altogether different, but intensely tasty alternative!
